If you want maternity coverage, you have a few choices.

1. You can purchase a health insurance plan with a maternity rider. we still have a few plans that offer this option. It is expensive and the coverage is limited.

2. If you live in Dade, Broward or Palm Beach counties we have an HMO plan with full maternity coverage as a rider. It is the most complete coverage we can offer you.

3. You can purchase an HSA (Health Savings Accont Plan) and put the money away pre-tax to pay for the charges

4. You can negotiate with the hospital for reduced fees

Please note, if you are already pregnant your only option is number 4.

Maternity Insurance Option 1 - Maternity Riders

You can purchase a health insurance plan that also covers pregnancy. There are two plans that still offer this option.

One plan pays a maximum of $4000 towards maternity costs. The other pays 60% of the costs after a $500 deductible.

If your prior delivery was a c-section, you cannot obtain maternity coverage from either of these plans.

You must wait 12 months from the day the plan goes into effect to become pregnant. There are no exceptions.

Maternity coverage with an HMO - Option 2

If you live in Dade, Broward, Palm Beach or Martin counties (or will use physicians in these areas) we have an HMO plan that will offer excellent maternity coverage.

They will take someone with a prior c-section but this plan has a 15 month wait before they will pay maternity claims. However, if you deliver after 15 months (i.e., you became pregnant before 15 months but delivered after being on the plan for 15 months) they will pay for the delivery.

Maternity Coverage with an HSA Plan - Option 3

An HSA allows you to put aside money to pay for the maternity expenses pre-tax. These are special high deductible health insurance plans.

Option 4 - Negotiate

Anyone can call the hospital and negotiate a special discounted rate for delivery. You don't have to waste your money on some special, expensive card or service. Pick up the phone and call. The money looks better in your pocket.
